Homemade Fabric Wreath
I really enjoy having a wreath on my front door. Something about it just makes our home seem a little more inviting, like we're saying "Come on in, y'all!" In saying that, I only have wreaths for the Fall/Christmas seasons, so I can't leave those hanging up on my door all year. Well, I could...but people would probably think I'm a little crazy, or lazy--one of the two I'm sure. I haven't taken the plunge into purchasing an every day wreath just because I couldn't justify spending money on that kind of thing. So instead of purchasing a pre-made wreath, I decided I would try my hand at making one myself.
This wreath was super simple to make and I think it turned out quite lovely. It took a lot of patience and time to get everything tied on to the wreath form, but there's absolutely no sewing involved! All you have to do is cut strips of fabric and tie them onto the wreath form. You can add embellishments if you want, or you can leave it as it is with just the fabric. My husband thought ours looked a little too plain with just the fabric, so I added the hydrangeas. We actually used these to cover the arbor we got married in front of 5 years ago. How fun and special!
Here's what you need to make this homemade fabric wreath:
About 5 yards of fabric
Rotary cutter/scissors (whatever you prefer)
Self-healing cutting mat
Ruler
Wire wreath form
Optional:
Fake hydrangeas
Floral wire
To begin this project, you'll want to cut all your strips first. I cut my fabric into strips that measured 1.75" x 9". I'm not really sure why I didn't do them 2" x 9", I guess it made sense at the time, but I don't remember why I chose to do it that way. You can make the strips thinner or thicker if you want. Thinner strips might be easier to tie than the thicker strips.
Continue this process until the entire wreath form is filled up.
When you do the middle rings of the wreath form, you'll want to make sure you're putting the folded edge of the fabric underneath the ring above it.

Cutting big pieces of fabric can be kind of tricky, especially if it's bigger than your mat. I don't know why I've never thought of doing this before, but I folded my fabric in half the long way two times so that it was much narrower. I did this so I could see all the numbers on my mat, and so that I could cut more strips at one time. I made sure one side of the fabric was at least 9 inches when I cut, that way I would only have to worry about cutting each strip into 1.75" pieces. And as a side note, I did have to go back and forth multiple times to get the fabric to cut all the way through since it was so thick.
Note** This trick may not work with other projects just because you may run the risk of not having clean, even cuts.
Once you're finished cutting all your strips, then the fun begins! Take one strip and fold it in half, bringing the shorter sides together. Then, lay the strip over one of the wire rings, with the folded edge on top.
Place your index finger and thumb through the folded edge of the fabric (I forgot to take a picture with my thumb through it.)
Grab the open end of the fabric from underneath the wire form and pull it through the folded edge of the fabric.
It should look like this after you've pulled it tight.
When you do the middle rings of the wreath form, you'll want to make sure you're putting the folded edge of the fabric underneath the ring above it.
It will start looking like this once you've gotten quite a few strips on there.
When you're all finished, it will look like this!
I did add 3 hydrangeas to my wreath because again, it looked a little plain. I didn't take pictures while I was doing this process, but I just stuck the stems through the middle of two of the rings on the form and then I secured it with one of those bag ties you get off bread bags...classy, I know! I didn't have any floral wire, so I just used what I had on hand (also, another reason why I didn't take pictures of that..haha)
I hope this post inspires you to create your own wreath! I'd love to see your finished products!
Until next time 😊
